At the Outwrite conference of gay and lesbian writers held last February in Boston, I attended a panel on the AIDS memoir. During the question and answer period, some-

one in the audience mentioned that he thought the AIDS memoir had already been written quite well by Paul Monette and others. He said that we should move on to other things.

Most of us sat there in shock, thinking of the ways each person experiences this disease differently, and the number of people

who have been silenced. There are so many stories left to tell.

I must admit, however, that when I said that out loud last February, I was not thinking of stories like the recent Sean's Legacy: An AIDS Awakening by Robert P. Hopkins.

This book is not aimed at lesbians, gay men, or anyone with much knowledge of AIDS. The cross on the book jacket's spine, and the photo of Sean as an acolyte in the Catholic church opposite the title page, both signal that this story is different from those told before.

The narrative focuses on Sean and his life as an outstanding student, who studied and consumed knowledge voraciously as his path took him towards a career with the government in international service. His father describes how his diagnosis in 1986 changed his son's life and his own.

As Hopkins met Sean's friends and other people with AIDS after Sean's death in 1990, he decided to write this book in order to educate others whom AIDS has not directly affected yet, a common goal of the AIDS memoir.

Hopkins directly confronts the desire to judge those with AIDS, saying, for example, "There's so much good in the worst of us and so many faults in the best of us, that who am I, and who are you, to stand in judgement?”

There were many times I wished points in the story had been more deeply developed or challenged, but I am not the intended audience. There are others, I am sure, that need to hear this story presented in a very basic way. It is interesting to see the AIDS memoir in this type of direction.
